Barratt Homes rewards local Seaside Savers with recycled friendship benches

Withernsea Primary School is now home to two brand new friendship benches, thanks to the hard work of five children, known locally as the Seaside Savers, Barratt Homes and its waste management service provider, Reconomy.

The Seaside Savers, Joe Lindgren, Ben Brocklebank, Kaesey Lister, Amelia Gallagher-Ward and McKenzie Gallagher-Ward, all pupils at Withernsea Primary School, are the quintet at the heart of the Seaside Savers.

The eco-friendly group collected over 10,000 plastic bottles throughout the summer as part of Humberside Police’s Lifestyle project, which aims to promote positivity, teamwork and community spirit; the Seaside Savers’ hard work placed them in the top three, winning a well-deserved holiday to PGL in Wales.

Following a recent bottle handover at Barratt Homes’ Cherry Tree Court development, the bottles were transformed into friendship benches, generously donated by Barratt Homes’ waste management service provider, Reconomy.

Helena Caulfield, Sales Adviser at Cherry Tree Court, commented: “It’s fantastic that the friendship benches have finally been unveiled and the children have been rewarded for all their hard work. Barratt Homes is committed to supporting environmental projects - at Cherry Tree Court we have already installed Bat Boxes, Bat Caves and Swift Bricks to provide new homes for wildlife in the area.”

Martin Lidgren, Staff Governor and Trustee at Withernsea Primary School, added: “We couldn’t be more proud of the children’s efforts in helping raise awareness of the issues that single use plastic causes our planet. To see the benches installed at our school is wonderful and we will benefit greatly from them for decades to come. We’d like to thank Barratt Homes and Reconomy for all their help from start to finish - they have been extremely supportive and without them, this wouldn’t have been possible.”

Tony Filson, Corporate Account Manager at Reconomy, noted: “Reconomy is delighted to have been a part of this fantastic Barratt Homes initiative. In truth, the Seaside Savers did all of the hard work and we were more than happy to provide the finishing touch, by installing the two new friendship benches. We hope that the school get great use out of the benches for years to come.”
