Greenlight for £28m plan to build 183 homes in Gateshead

Plans to build 183 new homes in Gateshead have been given the go-ahead.

Developer Keepmoat Homes is working in partnership with Gateshead Council to deliver a mix of two-, three- and four-bed houses and bungalows in Blaydon.

The £28m project will be built on a former council estate, most of which has been demolished.

Of the new homes, 170 will be for sale, 10 for rent and three for shared ownership sale through non-profit organisation Gateshead Housing Company.

Ian Prescott, Keepmoat Homes’ land and partnerships director for the North East, said: “We’re delighted to have been granted planning permission for this new development and look forward to bringing over 180 much needed new homes to the area.

“In addition to building new houses we’re also committed to supporting the communities in which we work.”

He added: “As work starts on site in Blaydon in March 2019, we will be working with local providers and partners to create apprenticeship and training opportunities for local people.”

Gateshead Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Malcolm Brain, commented: “We’re looking forward to the construction of these new homes, 27 of which will be classed affordable, getting underway early in the New Year.

“This is an exciting development for Blaydon. It fulfils the wishes of residents, who will be relieved to see this mostly vacant site come into active use.”

The scheme follows Keepmoat’s redevelopment of the southern part of the Bleach Green estate around 10 years ago, in partnership with Yuill Homes.
