Wildlife volunteers secure funds from housebuilder
A team of volunteers has commissioned a new wildlife information board for the Cromford Canal, after securing funding from a regional housebuilder.
The Cromford Canal & Codnor Park Reservoir Group received a £940 donation from Persimmon Homes Nottingham as part of its Community Champions fund, which sees two regional worthy causes awarded up to £1,000 each month.
The dedicated team of volunteers work tirelessly to restore a section of the Cromford Canal between Ironville and Jacksdale which is owned by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, to ensure free flowing water which encourages wildlife to thrive and to improve access and scenery for all to enjoy.
The new interpretation board will provide visitors with an understanding of the surrounding wildlife and the historical and industrial significance of the canal.
Marie Brown from The Cromford Canal & Codnor Park Reservoir Group explained: “We are a team of local volunteers who all share a passion for wildlife and our local community. We not only want to see the many creatures and plants that reside around the canal thrive, but we want to share this captivating information with future generations.
“The interpretation boards will tell the canal’s story and provide a valuable resource for visitors and hopefully engage them in wanting to help preserve our canals, wetlands and wildlife.
The Derbyshire Wildlife Trust will be helping us to design the board and already have a team of volunteers in place who will maintain the new Persimmon Homes’ board. We are very grateful to the housebuilder for making this possible.“
Neil Follows, managing director at Persimmon Homes Nottingham, said: “We are currently building in Hucknall, Ilkeston and Mansfield which surrounds the area where The Cromford Canal & Codnor Park Reservoir Group work, so we expect many of customers will benefit from their hard work.
“This is exactly what our Community Champions scheme is all about, supporting good causes to make a positive change in the areas we work.”
