Bellway buys land in southeast London for new homes and workspace

Housebuilder Bellway has acquired land in Lower Sydenham, southeast London, for the delivery of 159 new homes.

The brownfield site, located at Maybrey Works on Worsley Bridge Road, will be transformed into a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments along with light industrial space for businesses.

The land was originally home to a foundry that produced items for the war effort during the Second World War, although it currently houses outdated and rundown industrial facilities.

Bellway Homes will get construction work underway once the site’s existing warehouses have been demolished.

The scheme will feature a shared courtyard separating the homes from the workspace, with basement-level parking to serve both elements.

With the newly created workspace, the development will offer almost 13,000 sq ft for businesses in a range of sectors, including creative firms and startups.

The divisional planning manager for Bellway Homes’ Thames Gateway division, Jamie MacArthur, said: “We are pleased to be starting work on this piece of land which is currently a blot on the local landscape.

“We are delighted to be contributing to the neighbourhoods’ transformation, bringing new homes and business space to an area that is crying out for redevelopment.”

He continued: “These new properties will take advantage of the local amenities and excellent transport links. In unlocking its development potential, the regeneration of this brownfield space will make a significant contribution to supporting Sydenham’s growing housing requirement.”
