Abbey College Manchester Students Top of the Class

A talented group of mathematicians from Abbey College Manchester have recently excelled in a prestigious mathematics competition, with a duo of the gifted students placing within the top 1% nationally.

Students from the city centre-based college battled it out amongst over 650,000 others to qualify for a much-coveted place in the British Mathematics Olympiad team. Seven individuals and a team of four students entered into the Senior Challenges of the tournament, organised by the UK Mathematics Trust.

The group of four took part in the Team Challenge, where they worked together to solve problems and compete against other schools in the region. The Abbey Manchester cohort excelled, boasting an impressive 100% in the second round out of three and placing within the top five overall.

Seven students also competed in the individual Senior Challenge, with all participants securing a place in the top 60% nationally. Two of the students, Henry Zhang and Haojie Wang soared to success as they were placed in the top 1,000, qualifying for the esteemed British Olympiad, whilst the other five participants from the college were highly-commended with gold, silver and bronze awards.

Liz Elam, Principal at Abbey College Manchester commented, “Our students have truly excelled in this national competition and we are incredibly proud of them for their achievements.

“Not only did the challenge require a sound mathematical knowledge, but it also demanded that the students worked well as a team and utilised creative thinking, something which they did admirably. We are looking forward to seeing how Henry and Haojie progress further in the British Mathematical Olympiad.
