Construction starts on new multi-million pound facility for London School of Economics
Building company Mace has started work on the construction of a new site for the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Demolition of the existing structure, the former home of Cancer Research UK, was completed by McGee Demolition.
Mace will be working over the next two and a half years to deliver the Marshall Building – a new landmark academic facility for LSE’s central London campus.
The new building, expected to complete in 2021, will contain The Marshall Institute for Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship.
It will also house an accounting, finance and management department along with teaching, sports and arts rehearsal facilities. A Sport England-standard multi-purpose sports hall will also be implemented for use by staff and students.
Kenneth Kinsella, director of capital development for LSE, said: “This is a real milestone for the project, and we look forward to working with Mace over the next two years to turn our plans for the Marshall Building into reality.
“Our success to date is a reflection of all of the hard work put into the project so far by the entire team.”
Terry Spraggett, managing director of public sector construction for Mace, commented: “Over the last four years we have built a fantastic working relationship with LSE, first with the redevelopment of the Centre Buildings and now with the Marshall Building.
“They are a fantastic client, always pushing us to be more ambitious. The Marshall Building will be an iconic addition to the LSE’s campus.”
Mace has been working with LSE over the last four years on the construction of another development project, the Centre Buildings Redevelopment. That site is due to complete later this year and open in time for students for the beginning of the 2019/20 academic year.
