New restaurant brings the taste of Shanghai to London’s West End
Specialising in casual noodle and dumpling cuisine, Shanghai Modern has opened its doors in Chinatown, London.
Just four months after property firm Shaftesbury announced it as an upcoming venture, the new Shanghainese eatery has officially opened at 14 Newport Place.
Located in Shaftesbury’s Central Cross development, Shanghai Modern occupies a 4,000 sq ft unit designed by Habi Creative, complete with an open show kitchen where diners can watch their food being prepared by the chefs.
Chu Ting Tang, of Shanghai Modern, said: “With such a central location and vibrant atmosphere throughout the day and into the evening, Central Cross in Chinatown London is an idyllic destination to open our latest restaurant.
“Our offer is an experience to excite the senses and we are extremely lucky to have such a bespoke space in a brand-new development in Central London.”
The restaurant draws on inspiration from traditional Shanghainese dishes as well as international influences to offer a diverse menu.
Julia Wilkinson, head of group restaurant strategy at Shaftesbury, said that the fusion of traditional and neighbouring cuisines at the restaurant reflects the melting-pot nature of Shanghai itself.
She added: “We are thrilled that Shanghai Modern are transporting a small pocket of this to the streets of Chinatown London.”
