Five new electric car charging stations to be built in the North East

Electric vehicle charging company Fastned has won a second tender to build five new electric charging stations in the North East.

Planned for construction in Gateshead, Blyth, Whitley Bay, Washington and Newcastle’s Kingston Park, each station will house two 50kW rapid chargers delivering 100 per cent renewable electricity, meeting demand for charging facilities as electric vehicles increase in popularity.

Dutch company Fastned already has a growing network of charging stations across the Netherlands and Germany, and secured the tender led by the North East Joined Transport Committee as two additional Fastned stations currently undergo development in Newcastle and Sunderland as part of the Go Ultra Low NE programme.

CEO of Fastned Michiel Langezaal commented: “Fastned was founded to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles, so we are pleased we can start offering fast charging infrastructure in the North East of England.

“Reliable fast charging infrastructure will make fully electric vehicles just as practical as cars with internal combustion engines. Fastned has the ambition to build a European network of 1000 fast charging stations and aims to build more fast charging stations in the UK.”
