Record numbers for Heathrow in February as runways welcome millions
London’s Heathrow airport has announced a record number of passengers with February 2019 as its 28th consecutive record month for passenger growth.
Throughout the month the airport welcomed a total of 5.48 million people through its gates, a 1.7 per cent increase on February of the previous year.
The boost in passenger numbers is being attributed to the popularity of London Fashion Week, which showcased over 100 fashion-led businesses and saw an influx of visitors to the city from 49 countries around the world.
Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye commented: “Heathrow is the UK’s gateway to the world and we are proud to welcome the best global talent through our front doors for events such as London Fashion Week.”
Cargo performance also increased by 17.5 per cent compared with February 2018, with over 128,000 metric tonnes travelling through the airport on the way to global destinations, including increased cargo flights to Central and South America.
Despite Brexit uncertainty Heathrow continues to grow, having agreed a deal outlining incentives for airlines to grow passenger numbers as well as continuing plans for its proposed expansion.
John added: “As the UK prepares to leave the EU, our doors will remain firmly open, connecting more of the world’s most innovative and creative talent to the best of Britain.
“Having now completed of one of our biggest consultations to date, expansion remains on track to drive further growth for all of the UK and its future generations.”
