Proposed £1.5m restoration for Sting’s former hometown haunt

Site of the former Buddle Arts Centre is about to be handed over to Adavo Property in a restoration deal with North Tyneside Council.

The Grade II listed building in Wallsend was once the musical home of local popstar Sting, who used to regularly practise there in the early days of his career, as well as putting on a concert and paying for a new sound system for the centre in 1991.

Elected mayor Norma Redfearn CBE commented: “I am delighted at the prospect of a new lease of life for this fantastic building, which is very close to the hearts of everyone in Wallsend and the surrounding area.”

Plans for the £1.5m restoration of the site include the creation of workspaces as well as areas for events and conferences, with the development expected to create over 100 jobs for people in the area.

Chief executive of Adavo Property, Mark Black, explained: “The Buddle is an exciting project to be part of and we are raring to go.

“The Town Hall is now a thriving community hub in its own right, with Wallsend’s next generation of companies growing, creating new jobs and expanding quickly. We look forward to The Buddle becoming the next chapter in Wallsend’s continued resurgence.”
