£7.5m Newcastle City Pool transformation reaches final stages
The £7.5m restoration of Newcastle’s historic City Pool is entering the final stages ahead of its scheduled reopening this summer.
Located in the centre of the city next to the Northumbria University campus, the Grade II listed building has been refurbished by sports and leisure management specialist Fusion Lifestyle in partnership with Newcastle City Council.
First opening for use in 1928, the building has been vacant for a number of years and was threatened with permanent closure in 2013.
The restored building, due to open to the public at the end of the summer, will include a new gym and fitness space, pool, Turkish baths, spa and treatment area and cafe.
Newcastle City Council leader Cllr Nick Forbes said: “It is amazing to see the new life that is being breathed into the building…I’m so pleased it’s being given a new chapter and it has a really exciting future ahead as a leisure complex.
“It is going to have an exceptional offering which will be cherished by generations of people to come.”
