Students Shine in the Spotlight at Drama Performance Examinations

There were a wide range of outstanding performances from the students at Newcastle Sixth Form College, as they completed their group performance and monologue assessments as part of their A level examinations in Drama and Theatre.

Tackling a range of controversial and complex short dramatic performances, the students proved their talents in front of a live audience, which was recorded and also observed by the official examiner from EDEXCEL.

The group performance is a fundamental part of the final assessment, providing an opportunity to demonstrate a wide range of talents, with set design, lighting, sound, direction and individual performance being assessed as part of the examination. The students took on a number of challenging dramatic pieces including ‘All the Little Lights’ by Jane Upton and ‘Fewer Emergencies’ by Martin Crimp.

The five group performances took two evenings to complete at the colleges bespoke drama studio, and the addition of a live audience as well as examiner added to the overall experience.

Josh Bradley, Drama and Theatre Studies teacher at Newcastle Sixth Form College commented: ‘The exams really put the students in the spotlight, and the range of talent and skills demonstrated in all areas of production and performance were showcased with great confidence this week.’

‘We have great facilities and support at the college, and this helps get the very best out of the students, by equipping them with both the resources and experience they need to support them in this stage of their academic journey. It is wonderful to see their hard work rewarded with some extremely professional productions and performances, and this course is the gateway for many of them to enter the profession, and so it was an excellent practical element to the subject.’
