Colleague hailed a hero

Cairine Currie, Account Manager at Billingshurst marketing agency PMW Communications, is being hailed a hero by her colleagues after completing the London Landmarks Half Marathon on Sunday 24th March, despite breaking her wrist seven weeks ago and initially having to pull out of the event.

Cairine started a 20-week training programme at the beginning of November and was looking forward to completing her first half marathon in aid of Age UK. But, after a fall in February she badly broke her wrist and, following an operation where a metal plate was inserted, she was disappointingly advised to pull out of the event.

With her wrist on the mend, Cairine made the decision to run on the day of the half marathon and completed the course with her daughter Kirsten, who works for the charity.

Cairine commented:

“It was a hugely disappointing to have to pull out and, although my daughter took over my fundraising, I did feel I was letting down everyone who had made a donation. Age UK does fantastic work in supporting older people when they most need it by providing companionship, support and advice, so I was delighted to be able to complete the course and raise £560 to help them to be there for even more people.

“My PMW colleagues, family and friends have been hugely supportive, and I’d like to thank everyone who made a donation to support me and Kirsten.”

The 13.1-mile London Landmarks Half Marathon took runners past some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower of London, as well as some quirky hidden secrets, such as Britain’s smallest police station, and Australia House which was used as the setting for Gringott’s Bank in the Harry Potter films.

“We’re all so proud of Cairine, as we know how upset she was at having to pull out – she’s definitely a hero in our eyes! She hadn’t told anyone that she was considering running after all, so we were shocked and delighted to hear that she’d done it. Congratulations to Cairine and Kirsten for raising such as fantastic amount of money for Age UK.”
