Six figure success for Sunderland Restaurant Week

Eateries in Sunderland experienced a boost in business with another successful Restaurant Week last month.

The week-long event in March saw 40 of the city’s restaurants and cafes take part, offering discounts to encourage local people to try their cuisine, resulting in an economic impact of £170k for participating businesses.

Pan-Asian fusion restaurant Asiana was one of the top five most visited venues during the week. Owner Ian Wong commented: “We have been involved in Sunderland Restaurant Week since day one and it’s fantastic to see it go from strength to strength, with more traction building on the successes of previous years.”

Explaining the benefits of the event, Ian added: “It has been a great marketing tool for us to see the new faces and customers from around the area taking advantage of the offers and it also gives a healthy boost to midweek trade.”

Organised by Sunderland BID, the event has contributed more than £1m to the city since it began in 2016.

Sharon Appleby, head of business operations at Sunderland BID, concluded: “We’ve had some amazing feedback from both the restaurants involved and from diners who took advantage of the offers and I am delighted that it has been a successful venture for both sides.

“It is great to see that the event is still growing in popularity year on year and we already have plans in place for the next one.”
