David Wilson Homes helps local family with life-changing home renovation

Local housebuilder, David Wilson Homes, has recently helped a local Northallerton family, in a life-changing home renovation to improve quality of life for Mia Stokes, age 13 and her family.

Mia, has an undiagnosed brain condition, which means she cannot sit, stand, walk or talk – despite this, Mia’s unwavering determination helps her to communicate with her family in her own, unique way.

Mia, her parents Carly and Paul and her two younger sisters Molly and Boe moved into a four-bedroom detached home on the Castlegate development, in Northallerton at the beginning of last year. The family were overwhelmed by the compassion and support displayed by the Sales Advisers at Castlegate throughout the moving process, so much so that Carly recommended the development to her mother, who now also happily resides in an apartment at Castlegate alongside her partner who has purchased a further apartment, which he lets.

Mia’s mother, Carly, commented: “Mia is a remarkable young lady, with a beautiful smile. In moving to Castlegate, we hoped to find our forever home and a place that Mia could flourish, with a support network around her. This dream has been fulfilled, as after such a positive house buying experience, we also recommended the development to my mother who has since purchased an apartment.”

Since their move, Carly and Paul have encountered difficulties in trying to adapt their new home to suit Mia’s needs via the local authorities, and so contacted David Wilson Homes directly, to ask for their expert help.

David Wilson Homes, alongside a group of generous suppliers and contractors, donated their products and resources free of charge, to help facilitate the adaptations to Mia’s home. The work involved reducing the size of the study to install a level access wet room for Mia, creating a further opening from the hallway, and re-routing of the electrics and plumbing.

Carly continued: “Life before the adaptations to our home was terribly difficult. Mia is 5ft tall and weighs 6 stone so carrying her upstairs to the family bathroom and then lifting her out of the bath was a huge challenge. Our quality of life has been greatly improved since David Wilson Homes generously stepped in and facilitated the much-needed work to our home. We can’t thank everyone involved enough for their continued support, in particular Amy Jackson and Becky Newman from the sales office and Contracts Manager, Stuart Hall, as they really drove this forward and showed incredible compassion to our family circumstances. It’s made a massive difference to our family, especially Mia.”

Suppliers who kindly donated the shower, shower tray, radiator, wall and floor tiles, wooden flooring and plasterboard include Aqualisa, Merlyn, Towelrads, Johnson Tiles, Calverts Carpets and 4M. Contractors who offered their time and labour to support electrics, plumbing, wall and floor tiling, plasterboard and dry lining, floor laying and carpet fitting, joinery and decorating include DJR Smith, JN Dunn, JV Tiling, 4M, Calverts Carpets, Dave Langthorne and Gary Watson.
