Local housebuilders give boost to local charity
Local housebuilders, Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes have dug deep to ensure local people with mobility difficulties can enjoy spending time on the water.
The companies have provided the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust with a £1,000 donation, which will go towards the organisation’s ‘Mary Archard’ trip boat.
The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust works to preserve, conserve and improve the route of the Wilts & Berks Canal. The Trust’s aim is to create a sustainable and bio-diverse blue and green corridor that provides a host of attractive life and style and economic benefits to its communities and visitors, as well as providing a safe and welcoming habitat for wildlife.
Brian Stovold, the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust chair, said he was very grateful for the support from Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes.
He said: “The money donated will go towards supporting our ‘Mary Archard’ trip boat. The boat makes it possible for people with mobility difficulties to enjoy the delights of the Wilts & Berks Canal with an opening ramp allowing people in wheelchairs or with mobility problems safe access.
“The Trust will be at the Chippenham Folk Festival in May this year but with no bank ramp or slipway on the River Avon at this location, wheelchair passengers are currently unable to safely access the boat. This generous donation will allow volunteers to build a bank ramp for the Festival.
“We would like to thank everyone at Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes for their generous support, which will make it possible for everyone to enjoy being on the water.”
Daniel Pavely is project manager for the Wichelstowe development near Swindon, where both housebuilders are working together with Swindon Borough Council to create a community of up to 2,750 new homes.
He said: “We’re thrilled to support such a worthwhile cause. Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the delights that this historical canal has to offer. The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is an excellent charity and one that is close to our hearts as we get ready to launch our brand new canalside development at Wichelstowe in partnership with Swindon Borough Council.”
