Newcastle Hospital appoints high flying knee surgeon
A highly sought-after orthopaedic surgeon is bringing his expertise to the award-winning not-for-profit, Nuffield Health Newcastle Hospital.
Cristian Nita joins the orthopaedic team at Nuffield Health Newcastle Hospital with nearly twenty years’ experience. He also works as a consultant with the North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust at Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.
Cristian is recognised as a highly respected specialist in his medical field. His skills and status are reflected by him working alongside one of the country’s most experienced osteotomy surgeons, Matt Dawson with their Cumbrian NHS unit being known as one of the busiest in the UK.
Cristian’s current clinical coverage includes Carlisle, Penrith, Workington, Keswick and areas across the Lake District and now his appointment to Nuffield Health Newcastle will enable more people to access his clinical expertise across the wider North East.
Cristian specialises in lower limb arthroplasty, soft tissue knee reconstruction and young adult knee preservation surgery – areas of expertise he’s built up over the past decade.
He also offers other expert procedures including total hip and knee arthroplasty; partial knee arthroplasty; arthroscopic meniscal repair / partial meniscectomies; chondroplasty of articular cartilage; cartilage repair using micro fractures, nano fractures and bioscaffolds; and knee ligament reconstruction using autograft or allograft.
Cristian is married to wife Anca, who works as a consultant at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle and they have a son, Andrei, aged 11. Cristian originally trained as a trauma surgeon back in his homeland of Romania.
“I’m really looking forward to bringing my knowledge and expertise to Nuffield Health in Newcastle. My quest has always been about joint preservation and trying to alleviate people’s pain and giving them increased mobility and longevity in their day-to-day lives,” said Cristian. Cristian spent four years gaining priceless knowledge and experience by working as part of two successful Fellowship programmes in the region at the Sunderland Royal Hospital and the Harrogate District Hospital.
Cristian adds: “My time as a trauma surgeon and working on the Fellowship programmes has given me additional skills for my current medical practice. I’ve dealt with numerous complex cases where I’ve learnt some vital methods and procedures that will form a major part of my Nuffield Health clinics. It will be a great factor for Tyneside and the wider North East to make this kind of specialist patient care available to people in the region.
“Surgery is not always the answer for early symptoms of wear and tear. In such situations, I employ modern concepts including bracing, lubricant supplements, steroid injections, are accompanied by honest and realistic advice.”
Outside of his working life Cristian is an avid car enthusiast. He can often be seen karting on local racing tracks and even fixing up old cars. One of his proudest moments saw Cristian bringing back to life an Alfa Romeo 155 racing car over a two year period.
