£100m Whey Aye Quayside project picks up pace with green plans

Plans for Newcastle’s £100m Quayside development have advanced further with the unveiling of new additions to the project’s masterplan.

The Giants on the Quayside leisure, sport and hospitality development, which will see Newcastle become home to a 460ft tall observation wheel known as The Whey Aye, will now have more green spaces than initially planned, as shown in new images released by wheel developer World Wheel Company.

Green transport links are also being discussed between the wheel’s creator and local public transport providers, and an additional 44 parking spaces have been included in the development’s plans.

In addition to this, the project’s central 685 sq m LED screen, which was previously angled towards the public space outside the visitor centre entrance and The Whey Aye terminus, will now be integrated into the front of the building.

World Wheel Company Newcastle chief executive officer, Phil Lynagh, commented: “By further enhancing our plans in conjunction with Newcastle City Council and with the insight gained during our public consultations, we have made what we believe was an exceptional masterplan even better.

“The new images we have produced of the development help showcase the enhancements, whilst also letting people see how spectacular Giants on the Quayside will be once it is complete.

“We want Giants on the Quayside to be the very best it can be to create the greatest benefit for the city of Newcastle, its people and its business community, which is why we want to have the optimum development plan.”
