Manufacturing scientists of the future: Local manufacturer invites primary pupils for educational adventure

Cross Hills based manufacturer Airedale Chemical has strengthened its ties with local children with a visit from its in-house chemist and an invitation to join the rest of the team for a day of experiments and hands-on off-site learning to support their science curriculum.

Research and development chemist, Madeleine Lofthouse, entertained year four pupils from Sutton-in-Craven Community Primary School with tales from the world of chemistry and answered questions about working in a STEM career. She finished by inviting the class to join her and the rest of the experts at Airedale Chemical where a ‘science-tastic’ site visit is planned later this month.

This is the third year that Airedale Chemical has hosted pupils from the school in a bid to bring their science lessons to life and encourage younger generations to consider a future in STEM jobs.

Year four teacher at Sutton-in-Craven Community Primary School, Julia Forster, said: “Madeleine does a great job getting the children excited about the many interesting jobs available in chemistry and science. She leaves them feeling intrigued and eager about visiting her in her workplace.”

Chris Chadwick, managing director of Airedale Chemical, adds: “We engage with the school regularly but actually meeting the pupils is by far our favourite activity. It feels great to give something back to the community we’ve been part of for 25 years. We have a lot of experience to share and we really feed off the energy and enthusiasm of the kids.”

Airedale Chemical has been based in Cross Hills since 1994 and provides chemicals and contract manufacturing to markets including manufacturing, dairy, recycling and waste management.
