One in eight employees receive mental health training at The Health Insurance Group

Rolling out its second tranche of mental health training to staff in May, more than one in eight (13%) employees at The Health Insurance Group are now trained as Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Champions. As part of the company’s mental health wellbeing strategy, 16 further members – primarily managers and sales staff have been trained to, among other things, spot the signs of mental ill-health, support employees experiencing mental health concerns, and support positive wellbeing.

This is part of a wider campaign from The Health Insurance Group to support mental health in the workplace, which kicked off in earnest in March 2018 – when an initial 17 managers and team leaders had mental health training. The business offers further holistic mental health and wellbeing support, including:

  • Forums for employees who want to share their own mental health journeys with others – breaking down any potential stigma and creating an open dialogue
  • Health kiosks - providing a snapshot of physical health which can impact mental health
  • Monthly committees - for employees to discuss any issues pertinent to their working life
  • Employee benefits to support financial, physical and mental wellbeing.

Brett Hill, managing director at The Health Insurance Group, said: “Providing mental health training to staff is just one element of our overall business strategy to support mental health in the workplace. Our efforts are paying off as well, having recently achieved Silver in Mind’s Workplace Wellbeing Awards 2018/2019 – further proof that we are successfully promoting ‘positive mental health and demonstrating impact over time’.

“All the initiatives we run are fully supported from the top, and actively engaged with throughout the business. We continue to look for ways to support our staff more thoroughly with their mental health and are pleased that it’s a conversation they feel comfortable contributing to.”
