Heathrow unveils major expansion plan for 2026

Heathrow Airport is aiming to construct a third runway by 2026 with hopes of its expansion being complete by 2050.

This is according to its latest ‘masterplan’, including the diversion rivers and rerouting the M25 through a tunnel under the third runway.

These plans have faced opposition, and proposals are open to public consideration until September 13, 2019.

Emma Gilthorpe, Heathrow’s executive director for expansion, said: “We have been working with partners at the airport, in local communities and in government to ensure our plans show how we can grow sustainably and responsibly - with environmental considerations at the heart of expansion.”

The local environmental groups have argued against the third runway, saying it would cause much upset in terms of noise and pollution, as well as adding to the UK’s carbon emissions from the extra flights.

However, Heathrow has proposed a new low-emission zone for the airport. This means that additional charges will be added on to those driving there with a vehicle more polluting. The airport is said to be looking at better public transport links.
