Port of Tyne breakfast clubs to boost learning
Pupils at two schools South and North of the River Tyne are guaranteed a nutritious start to the day thanks to Breakfast Clubs provided by Port of Tyne and Greggs Foundation.
Port of Tyne has partnered with Greggs Foundation to fund two Breakfast Clubs within the Port’s community in South and North Shields.
The Port of Tyne’s Breakfast Clubs will support 100 primary school children at Silverdale Primary in Wallsend and Marine Park Primary in South Shields.
The Port of Tyne joins over 500 breakfast clubs, providing free breakfasts to over 32,075 children every school day.
Pupils will have access to a nutritious breakfast before lessons begin each day with time to socialise with their friends before school, and take part in activities which can result in better behaviour in class.
Nolan Gray, Port of Tyne Business Development Director, said: “We are delighted to support young people within our community ensuring that the children get the best start to their day with a healthy breakfast. It’s such a simple and effective concept that we hope makes a tangible difference to families in our local community.”
Lynne Hindmarch Greggs Foundation, Breakfast Club Manager (North and Pennines), said: “Eating a balanced and nutritious breakfast is vital for schoolchildren to start the day properly and be ready to learn. We’re thrilled to see the difference our Breakfast Club initiative has made for parents especially on low incomes who have work and college commitments as well as teachers who often notice improvements in pupils’ learning and levels of concentration when they attend a Breakfast Club.”
The Port’s funding will enable both schools to operate Breakfast Clubs for two years covering the start-up and operating costs including the delivery of fresh bread from their nearest Greggs shop, and cereals, milk, spreads, fruit and yoghurt.
The Greggs Breakfast Club Programme was established in 1999 to help primary school children get a nutritious start to their school day, every year the scheme sees over 32,000 breakfasts served supporting young people in education.
