Final phase underway on £1.2m County Durham hotel refurbishment

Work has commenced on the final phase of a full renovation of a County Durham hotel and restaurant.

Dating back to the 18th century, The Hardwick Arms Hotel in Sedgefield has undergone a transformation led by property firm EMA Group Holdings Ltd.

The Herd and Herb restaurant and lounge bar within the hotel is now open to the public after a four month closure, along with 11 newly renovated bedrooms.

The final phase will see the refurbishment of the venue’s bar in what was formerly the cellar and the launch of a new summer café in a former servants’ quarters and storage area, with completion expected in August.

The Grade II listed building, which closed over four months ago for the refurbishment, has since partially reopened to welcome guests while the final phase is completed, with the renovation creating 23 jobs for locals.

Herd and Herb operations manager, Rachel Johnson, said, ‘The venue has been transformed and we’re delighted to have received such wonderful feedback since we opened.“

Local resident Claire Todd added, “The Hardwick Arms closed earlier this year and was sorely missed amongst the residents.

“With the summer coming, this opening couldn’t have come at a better time and we’re all delighted with the refurbishment. It’s so different to what it was before and we can’t wait until the new bar and summer café opens.”
