Sunderland City Council's local plan proposal includes 7,000 new jobs and better housing
Sunderland City Council has published proposed changes to the city’s core strategy plan.
The Core Strategy and Development Plan 2015-2033 - or Local Plan - sets out how Sunderland aims to develop in the next few years.
It will allocate how land is to be developed, or kept for things like businesses, housing and recreation. It will also aim to create over 7,000 new jobs for the city.
Cllr Graeme Miller, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “It is good to see that the inspector has very much supported our overall approach.
“We will now focus on making the modifications the inspector has requested and these will be published for consultation in the coming months. The examination in public with its community engagement was always a key part of the plan’s stages.
“This plan is setting down a strong framework for our city’s vibrant, healthy and dynamic future.”
Following three weeks of hearings, which began in May, before a planning inspector, the inspector has now outlined proposed modifications to the plan. The inspector’s note has proposed modifications.
The council’s plan outlines how 13,410 more homes will supposedly be needed by 2033, with an average of 745 to be built each year to help deal with the expected population increase.
Furthermore, there are proposals being made to help broaden Sunderland’s housing base, including larger family homes and ‘affordable’ housing.
