Additional £2.5m boost for UK's £1.5bn electric car charging point scheme
A further £2.5m is being invested into the installation of over 1,000 vehicle chargepoints across the UK.
The funding, revealed today (August 12) by transport secretary Grant Shapps, is to support the on-street residential chargepoint scheme, which was launched in 2017. It aims to help people access charging infrastructure near their homes.
The scheme is also trying to encourage more people to choose an electric vehicle over a petrol or diesel model, following a 158 per cent rise in electric car sales compared to July 2018.
The scheme has seen 16 local authorities prepared to install 1,200 chargepoints so far this year.
Transport secretary, Grant Shapps, said: “It’s vital that electric vehicle drivers feel confident about the availability of chargepoints near their homes, and that charging an electric car is seen as easy as plugging in a smartphone.”
The allocation of funding for on-street residential chargepoints is part of the £1.5bn investment, underpinned by the Road to Zero Strategy.
