Teesside logistics and distribution site under renovation could boost economy by £180m

Scott Bros. is repurposing 48,000 unwanted tonnes of soil excavated amid the construction of Darlington’s Amazon logistics and distribution hub.

Rather than ending up in landfill, the Teesside-based firm is recycling the sustainable resource by using it to infill an undulating area of land adjacent to the site.

The excavated soil is being layered to provide a level area to improve drainage by eliminating water logging.

Bob Borthwick, commercial manager at Scott Bros., said: “We are experts at handling excavation and bulk earthmoving and are proud to be play a role in such an exciting project.

“The area next to the main Amazon site contains deep depressions and rather than the excavated soil going to landfill, we are reusing it to improve the neighbouring land to create a well-drained and more attractive area.”

Once the Teesside-based firm has finished this work, the area will hopefully be landscaped and reseeded.

The 1.6m sq m Amazon logistics hub is situated next to Lingfield Park, on the eastern edge of the town. It forms a major part of the 90-acre Symmetry Park, which has the potential to create around 3,000 jobs and contribute £180m to the regional economy.

Bob added: “The Amazon logistics hub represents a significant investment that will bring much- needed jobs to Darlington as well as creating further economic impetus which, as a local family-run firm, we very much welcome.

“It is in a prime location and represents a real economic asset that can attract other businesses to the area and increase the economic prosperity of the wider Tees Valley.”
