London airport to boost footfall with European budget airline partnership

Aviation operator Stobart Group has agreed a new partnership between its London airport and a low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe.

The aviation, energy and civil engineering group has announced that London Southend Airport has signed an agreement with budget airline Wizz Air for three new routes.

From today, the airline will operate 14 weekly flights from the airport to Bucharest and Sibiu in Romania, as well as Vilnius in Lithuania.

It is expected that the partnership will increase footfall at the airport by 250,000 in the first 12 months of the five-year agreement, helping the airport to achieve its goal of becoming London’s ‘next big airport’.

Warwick Brady, CEO of Stobart Group, said: “The agreement with Wizz Air is another significant milestone in the development of the UK’s fastest-growing airport, London Southend Airport.

“The partnership increases the domestic and European destinations we can offer customers to more than 40 by adding exciting and increasingly popular destinations in Central and Eastern Europe.

“Last year, we increased passenger numbers at London Southend Airport by one-third to more than 1.5 million. This is part of our plan to become London’s next big airport as we aim to hit our target of 5 million passengers per annum by February 2023.”
