Barnsley transplant centre set for £13.9m transformation into 'world-class' research facility
A blood and transplant centre in Barnsley is set to undergo a £13.9m full internal fit-out to become a ‘state-of-the-art’ research facility.
Construction firm Kier has been appointed to carry out the work at Barnsley NHSBT centre in Capitol Park in Dodworth.
Comprising 6,750 sq m, the centre will include three labs on the ground floor and an additional lab, open plan office space, meeting rooms and catering facilities on the first floor.
In addition, the centre will also house environmentally controlled laboratories to be used to research advanced cell therapies.
Due for completion in the second quarter of 2020, the centre could become ‘one of the most advanced cell research facilities in the world’ according to Kier.
John O’Callaghan, managing director for Kier Regional Buildings Northern, commented: “I am pleased we have been appointed to deliver phase 2 of this state-of-the-art facility.
“It is a crucial development for the people of North of England and hospitals in the region.
“Throughout our works Kier will be providing a number of employment opportunities to local people. We will have apprentices on site and work experience opportunities, as well as engaging with local schools through educational activities.”
