School season in full swing at Martin-Brooks

While teachers and children enjoy the final days of summer, Sheffield’s expert roofers, Martin-Brooks, are busy filling classrooms across the north with the sounds of hard work.

There has been no holiday for the specialist roofers who have been making the most of the six-week break to carry out repairs at nine schools, stretching across three counties.

Martin-Brooks has undertaken projects of all shapes and sizes, from full roof replacements to small scale tile renewals and repairs. Whilst the majority of these have taken place in the firm’s home county of South Yorkshire, its site teams are working as far afield as Leeds and Nottinghamshire.

The largest project Martin-Brooks has had to fulfil is for Burley St Matthias School in Leeds, where the local council commissioned a full reroof on the Victorian building, as it was in a poor state of repair. The £100,000 contract required the replacement of 200m² of Welsh slate and some flat areas of felt and has taken a team of four the entire six weeks to complete.

Closer to home, the firm is working with main contractors, Blackthorne Building and Design to install slating, leadwork and liquid coatings at Sheffield Girls High School, whilst Rotherham Council requested jobs of varying complexity at three primary and junior schools across the borough.

Martin-Brooks’ director, Nick Brooks, said: “Schools schedule construction work for the summer break to minimise the risk to children in their care. Each year, we are asked to undertake a number of projects of this nature and coordinating the work in such a relatively short period requires high levels of organisation. Thankfully, our roofing teams are used to the pressures involved and we enjoy the challenge. I’m pleased to say we are on target to deliver all nine contracts on time and on budget.”

Martin-Brooks is a member of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors’ heritage register and Criminal Records Bureau checks are carried out on all site operatives to guarantee their suitability for work around children.
