New chapter for Charing Cross bookshop thanks to six-figure NatWest funding

A bookshop in central London is entering a new era after being acquired by its manager with support from NatWest.

Any Amount of Books, situated on Charing Cross Road, has been acquired by manager Gillian McMullan after she secured a £168,500 funding package from the bank.

Gillian purchased the store from former owner and founder Nigel Burwood, who originally established Any Amount of Books in Hammersmith in 1970 before moving to Charing Cross in the 1980s.

New owner Gillian commented: “Having been store manager at Any Amount of Books for 30 years, I am passionate about the business and our reputation as an independent retailer in the city centre.

“The funding from NatWest has allowed me to purchase the business from Nigel, securing the store’s position on the high street and enabling us to continue to source and sell new, used and rare books to our loyal and growing customer base.”

Jon Fordham, relationship manager at NatWest, added: “Any Amount of Books is a prime example of an independent store that has built an established customer base both in London and further afield.

“With the funding we have provided, Gillian will now both own and manage the business and we hope to see the store remain open for many years to come.”
