South Tyneside Council encourages residents to act on 15-year Local Plan closing soon

South Tyneside locals and businesses are being encouraged to have their say on the current version of the draft Local Plan ending next Friday (October 11).

Residents are invited to voice their thoughts and ideas on South Tyneside Council’s Plan, which will become a blueprint for future development in the borough.

The plan will look at new homes, businesses, shops and leisure facilities, and where and when they will be built over the next 15 years.

It wants to ensure that growth is being delivered with the right infrastructure, like roads and public transport, health and community facilities.

Cllr John Anglin, lead member for regeneration and economy, said: “We really encourage residents and businesses to have their say during this consultation period because the Local Plan will affect everyone who lives and works here.

“The Plan will set out where we live, shop, play and travel around the borough and we are keen to hear people’s views.”

He added: “Having a plan ensures we are in control of our own destiny and allows us to build development in the right way, in the right place and with the necessary infrastructure to support it.”

Following the current consultation period, there will also be a further consultation on the revised publication draft.

The Plan will be submitted to the secretary of state for a public examination before an independent planning inspector.

Cllr Anglin added: “Officers are available to discuss any issues or concerns related to the development of the local plan both during and after the consultation period.”

Hard copies of the plan and response form are available in libraries and in the reception at South Shields and Jarrow town halls.
