Sunderland on track for 900 new homes as Gentoo secures second site

Housing specialist Gentoo has secured planning permission to develop a second site as part of a wider plan to deliver over 900 new homes in Sunderland.

Gentoo’s second site, a 44 unit development at Avenue Vivian in Fencehouses, was approved by Sunderland City Council’s Planning Committee earlier this week.

This latest development will offer two- and three-bedroom houses and two-bedroom bungalows all at 80 per cent of local market rents.

Work is set to commence on the development early next year, with the first of the new homes available to rent in late 2020.

The news follows the approval of 56-home Gentoo project in Downhill last month, and forms part of the housing firm’s £117m Affordable Homes Plan which aims to bring 900 affordable rented homes to the city by 2024.

Nigel Wilson, Gentoo Group’s chief executive officer, commented: “We announced our plans to provide 900 more affordable rented homes in Sunderland in April and I’m thrilled that we’re progressing with such pace.

“We’ve secured planning permission for 100 new affordable homes in just one month and we’re looking forward to starting to develop these sites early next year.

“Gentoo is directly addressing the ongoing shortage of affordable rented homes in Sunderland and, through our Affordable Homes Plan, we’ll provide a great choice of quality new and refurbished homes for rent across the city.”
