Life-Saving Defibrillator Installed at Derby’s Cardinal Square

A piece of life-saving equipment has been installed at Cardinal Square, Derby’s most high-profile office development.

The building’s owners, Nurton Developments, have installed a defibrillator close to their reception and break-out area for use by tenants, visitors and members of the local community.

Defibrillators, also known as AEDs (Automatic External Defibrillators), are small medical devices, designed to deliver an electric shock to a person who is having a sudden cardiac arrest.

It is estimated that around 100,000 people die from sudden cardiac arrest in the UK every year and while CPR saves the lives of around 9%, if a defibrillator is used alongside effective CPR within three to five minutes of cardiac arrest, the chances of survival are estimated to increase to around 50%.

If the defibrillator is ever needed, staff and tenants just need to call 999 and the emergency operator will pass on a code that will open the locked case that the equipment is stored in. The device will then talk the person through the process of how to use it.

One of the most visible office developments in Derby, Cardinal Square is located on the outskirts of Derby city centre, sitting at the junction of the A61 and A52.

Commenting on the installation of the defibrillator, David Dyas, asset manager at Cardinal Square, said:

“Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the UK’s biggest killers and as a responsible employer, Nurton Developments was keen to get more life-saving equipment to places like Cardinal Square where it can potentially save lives.

“Whilst we hope it never has to be used, having the defibrillator installed will help decrease the risk of fatalities from one of the most common heart conditions.”
