1,500 new homes and hundreds of jobs to be created with Greenwich development
Plans for a regeneration project along the River Thames that will deliver around 1,500 new homes and hundreds of new jobs have been unveiled.
Regeneration specialist U+I has revealed its plans for a mixed-use scheme on Greenwich Peninsula, which will provide more than six acres of outdoor and public space along the river.
Plans for the site include 11 new residential buildings with vertical green facades, comprising 1,500 new homes including private sale, shared ownership and London Affordable Rent.
In addition, the development will feature a 4-acre riverfront park known as Morden Park, a new public square and several spaces for commercial units, which will directly support around 600 new jobs.
Richard Upton, chief development officer at U+I, explained: “Our vision is to create a vibrant community rooted in the site’s heritage with world class public realm.
“We will bring together new homes, retail, leisure, employment and an extensive riverfront park to create a dynamic and integrated neighbourhood on the banks of the Thames.
“We will deliver a scheme that not only opens up and transforms the area into a green mixed-use development, but also drives growth and employment, and delivers much-needed homes.”
Working with Dutch architect OMA (The Office for Metropolitan Architecture), U+I is currently consulting the local community and stakeholders on the plans.
Reinier de Graaf, partner at OMA, commented: “Our designs have drawn inspiration from Greenwich Peninsula’s industrial heritage - from the warehouses and silos that once sat on the site, to the iron lattice structure of the gasholders.
“We have also looked back further, to the original marshland landscape of the peninsula, and in creating the park and public realms we are seeking to return the post-industrial landscape to a more natural and ecologically diverse condition, reminiscent of the site’s original condition.
“Importantly, Morden Wharf is designed to foster community and has the right mix of uses to create a successful and vibrant neighbourhood, all stitched together with beautiful public realm.”
