Historic Newcastle building transformed into ‘luxury’ residences in £2.5m restoration

The restoration and conversion of a historic place of worship in Newcastle has been completed ahead of its launch this weekend.

Byzantine House, located in Eskdale Terrace in Jesmond, has been converted into a ‘luxury’ residential development by local firm Provenance Developments, and officially launches today (October 11).

Originally built as a synagogue, the Grade I listed building was constructed in 1914-15 to a design by local architect Marcus Kenneth Glass in an Art Deco interpretation of the Byzantine Revival style.

Formerly used by Newcastle High School for Girls, the building is now home to 10 one and two-bed apartments and mews, with property agent Urban Base marketing the development.

Jan Dale, director at Urban Base, commented: “The luxurious one and two bed apartments have been meticulously refurbished to retain a classic style, while offering a superb standard of contemporary specification.

“The developer and design team have extensive experience in carefully regenerating unique buildings and pride themselves in their attention to detail, bringing historical features to life while creating elegant spaces with every modern comfort and convenience.”

In July this year, Newcastle City Council placed a blue plaque on the building in recognition of its historic significance. Lord Mayor Cllr David Cook added: “There’s an enormous danger when historic buildings change their use that their heritage is lost but this fantastic building has been retained.

“I’m delighted that we still have it here in Jesmond.”
