Contractor on track to complete infrastructure at 150-acre Cheshire Green Industrial Park

A leading civil engineering contractor is on track to complete the access road and associated infrastructure for the next phase of a 150-acre business park in Cheshire.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK was appointed by the developers of the Cheshire Green Industrial Park (Cheshire Green) to design and construct a 1km spine road plus junctions to each of 10 new units.

The family-owned firm has now completed the three asphalt layers for the access road. It is currently constructing a 2m wide footpath and 3m wide cycleway alongside, prior to laying the fourth, final surface of roadway in early November.

Project manager Gareth Jones said that special measures had had to be taken to design a drainage system that allowed for surface water to drain away correctly and effectively from the very flat site, formerly an airfield.

He said: “We had to excavate deeper than usual. Both pumping stations we’ve built, one for surface water and the other for foul water, are nine metres below the surface, which is very deep.

“The underground rising main we’ve installed is 1.3km long, to ensure the waste water is pumped away to the site outfall.”

Jones Bros is also now constructing a 33kV substation to accommodate the needs of the industrial units and integrate into the existing power distribution network.

The contractor is also carrying out extensive landscaping, including planting of maple trees either side of the spine road.

Gareth added: “Along with grass verges, these maples will create a boulevard effect.

“We’re also seeding wildflower and have native structure planting to the storm attenuation basin, with street lighting installation and commissioning due in mid-October.”

An average of 25 personnel are working on the scheme, which is on course to be completed on time before the end of 2019.

In 2018, under an earlier contract, Jones Bros had constructed the roundabout which gives access to the £100m industrial park from the A51.

Cheshire Green is on the A51 between Calveley and Barbridge, and next to Boughey Distribution. The location benefits from its easy connections with key motorways including the M6 and M56 as well as the A55 in North Wales.

The units, which are ideal for industrial, warehouse, distribution and storage use, will have access to superfast fibre broadband as well as ample parking and a frequent bus service. Legat Owen and Fisher German are marketing the units.

Phillip Posnett, director of Cheshire Green, said: “We are committed to creating a major employment destination here at Cheshire Green. “It’s the second contract we’ve given to Jones Bros. We’re finding that the company is really proactive and very easy to deal with. This job is going exactly to plan and we’re pleased with their work so far.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros is now being run by the second and third generations of the founding family. It employs more than 350 people.

In addition to highways, it is currently working on contracts in various sectors including the construction of waste management facilities, renewable energy, and flood and marine defence projects across the UK.
