Walker Filtration - Meet Our Graduates

Walker Filtration recently welcomed another addition to our Graduate Development Scheme, which provides the opportunity for new recruits to rotate through departments within the business.

We caught up with Andrew Leather, to learn about his experience on the scheme so far.

What did you study before you joined Walker Filtration? Before Joining Walker Filtration, I graduated from the University of Sunderland with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

What made you decide to apply to the graduate development scheme?

I decided that the graduate scheme offered at Walker Filtration would allow me to develop my knowledge gained at University, as well as getting invaluable practical experience from rotational placements throughout various departments. It is also incredibly reassuring to see how the company has grown in previous years and I look forward to being part of its continued expansion.

What was it that attracted you to the company?

During my initial research into the company, I was very impressed with how successful the previous graduate students had been. Upon attending my first interview and finding out more about the company, it was great to see how the company’s family values ran through each aspect of the business and how their ambitious development plans aligned with my own. When I was given a tour of the factory and offices, I was impressed at how friendly and welcoming all the staff were, as well as how pristine the whole building was.

What has your experience been like so far?

I have joined the team at a very busy time and there is a lot going on in terms of positive change in the business. I was surprised to have been given the opportunity to work on new and developing projects so early on, which has been great as I have had to find my feet quickly. The support from everyone in the technical team has really helped. So far, I have been doing a lot of 3D design work to help the team with various projects and this has helped me get up to speed with various company procedures.

What are you looking forward to on the scheme?

I am looking forward to managing my own project in the second year of the scheme.

Where do you see yourself in two years, after finishing the scheme?

Upon completion of the scheme, I would like to settle into a role as a Design or Development Engineer, as it would mean working on a variety of interesting projects and new products.

Finally, what is the best thing about working at Walker Filtration?

The people. It is an incredibly friendly atmosphere and you can see that people enjoy working here, which makes it easy to come to work every day.
