British Council for Offices celebrates emerging property talent in the north at NextGen awards
Simon Hill, Associate Director at DLG Architects LLP, was named the Rising Star of the North at the fourth annual British Council for Offices (BCO) NextGen Awards on Tuesday November 12th.
The awards dinner, which took place at The Porter Tun, London, was attended by the country’s top designers, developers, architects and occupiers under the age of 35. It celebrated the achievements and successes of young professionals in the commercial property sector across the UK, and the leaders who have inspired them.
The BCO NextGen Rising Star award recognises an under 35’s outstanding contribution to the office sector in their region. Simon Hill, who has been with DLG Architects LLP for just five years, was named as the North’s winner by a panel of local judges.
Since joining DLG Architects as a Part II Architectural Assistant five years ago, Simon has qualified as an Architect, been promoted to Associate Director, delivered an award-winning workplace refurbishment for a Legal 500 company and become co-president of the Leeds Society of Architects, a branch of RIBA Yorkshire. The judges felt Simon’s progression is a testament to his creativity and rigour, making him a valuable member of the BCO NextGen community and worthy winner of the Rising Star award.
The judges were also impressed by Simon’s focus on the people at the heart of his projects. He demonstrated a genuine passion for creating positive spaces that enhance the lives of their end users, which his colleagues agreed has allowed him to find innovative solutions for his clients. It is clear Simon’s leadership skills also allow him to take project team, client and occupier alike on a journey, so everyone feels involved in the work.
Simon is also co-president of the Leeds Society of Architects, organising events and opportunities for its 500 members in the region. The judges were impressed by his generosity and dedication to promoting the interests of others and ensuring his peers continue to challenge and inspire one another.
The Awards are part of the BCO’s NextGen programme, which sets out to mentor and encourage the next generation of professionals to become future leaders in the industry, whilst providing a platform for new talent to share ideas.
Richard Robinson, Partner at Shulmans LLP and Chair of the BCO NextGen North chapter, said: “Simon’s tenacity and creativity on the Wellington Street refurbishment has allowed his whole team to flourish and create a positive working environment. Simon sets a fantastic example for aspiring architects and I would like to offer my congratulations that he has been recognised in the industry for his passion and talent.”
Paul Patenall, President of the BCO, added: “Simon embodies what our NextGen programme is all about – young talent that works hard to inspire and promote those around them. Not only does he have a remarkable portfolio, but he builds in time to support the development of those around him. Many congratulations – a most worthy winner.”
