3,000 jobs to be slashed by Tata Steel
Tata Steel is planning to cut around 3,000 EU jobs to ‘come to terms’ with the current international steel industry.
Tata Steel aims to focus its sights on higher-value products, also addressing no plant closures are imminent. Around two-thirds of the jobs to be cut are said to be office-based.
The company employs around 20,000 people. Port Talbot’s steelworks are said to employ 8,385 of those in the UK.
The news follows on from German rival Thyssenkrupp trying to merge and it being blocked earlier this year.
The business employs about 20,000 people and is owned by India’s Tata.
Port Talbot steelworks employs just under half of Tata’s 8,385-strong workforce in the UK. Meanwhile, British Steel employs around 4,000 people at its Teesside and Scunthorpe sites.
Since May 2019 when it fell into liquidation, the UK government has been keeping it afloat.
