mac-group appointed to newest Javelin Block development in the JQ

West Midlands-based construction company mac-group has begun work to convert a grade II listed factory in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter into uniquely styled apartments.

Javelin Block, the award-winning design and build company known for revitalising former industrial sites into extraordinary homes, has appointed mac-group to undertake the wholesale refurbishment of the Taylor and Challen building, the former metal pressing factory at Derwent House, Mary Ann Street/Livery Street.

The 42,733 sq ft site, close to St Paul’s Square, is being converted into 40 new apartments – a mix of one- and two-bedroom homes – most of which will be duplex and will feature an eye-catching spiral staircase and individual winter gardens.

Ray O’Sullivan, director at mac-group, said the extensive, £6.4 million works will include some demolition of a modern extension, as well as removal and replacement of the existing pitched roof and windows, full face restoration, to include concrete repairs, brickwork restoration and replacement and refurbishment of Crittall windows.

Other works include the refurbishment of the exposed internal steelwork and trusses as well as the installation of recycled light fittings. The bespoke work will also entail thorough cleaning and repair of the internal brick work, which will be left on show.

“We’re thrilled to play a significant role in the refurbishment of this historic building,” said Ray.

“The foundry has a number of important features that we will be carefully restoring to bring it back to its former glory. Javelin Block’s unique vision has helped to revitalise a number of former industrial units in the historic Jewellery Quarter and this particular scheme promises to deliver the same superlative quality as the developer’s previous projects.

“We’ll be using our skills to ensure the integrity of the building remains, while delivering a stunning residential development that will appeal to anyone who appreciates the beauty of early 20th century architecture.”

Architects for the scheme are Glancy Nicholls Architects, while PMP Consultants have been appointed as project manager and quantity surveyor, and CWA structural engineers.
