43 jobs saved as Gateshead Homebase to remain open

Home improvement and garden retailer Homebase has secured a rescue deal with the landlord of its Gateshead store.

The store, which has been on the site since 1987, will decrease in size from 45,000 sq ft to 22,500 sq ft instead of closing as it was originally scheduled to do.

The rescue deal will save 43 jobs at the store, which will continue to offer the full range of Homebase products including kitchens, DIY materials and furniture.

Mark Simanis, Homebase Gateshead store manager, said: “We’re delighted to have avoided closure and be able to continue to serve our customers.

“We’re now more motivated than ever to ensure everyone enjoys shopping with us. I have worked for the business for 26 years, and I’m excited to continue my journey with Homebase.”
