Next phase of £100m South Shields masterplan unveiled with new Jobcentre office plans

A planning application for a new job centre in South Shields has been submitted to South Tyneside Council.

Urban developer Muse Developments has submitted the application for the construction of a 12,000 sq ft centre on Mile End Road, which will become the town’s new Job Centre Plus.

Forming part of the £100m South Shields 365 regeneration masterplan being delivered through collaboration between Muse and South Tyneside Council, the new building will accommodate 65 DWP employees.

The current Jobcentre premises on is earmarked for demolition to free up land and bring progress with Phase Three - a retail and leisure offer.

News of the planning application follows the completion of the town’s new £21m interchange and the National Centre for the Written Word.

David Wells, regional director at Muse Developments, commented: “It’s a fantastic achievement for everyone involved in South Shields as we put forward planning for the next stage of the development, which will complement what has been delivered so far, and open the door to future opportunities to further create a real vibrancy in the town centre.

“Working collaboratively and progressively with our partners at South Tyneside Council, we’re able to deliver at pace to bring forward transformational regeneration that will benefit both the town and the community for years to come.”
