IT decision makers reveal their top 5 IoT concerns

Employees bringing their own apps into the workplace has been identified as the top IoT scaling concern for IT decision makers. That’s according to new research from Kollective, the leading provider of software-defined enterprise content delivery networks to the Global 2000.

The Kollective report, ‘Distributed Devices’, is based on a survey of 270 US and UK based IT decision makers, exploring the challenges and risks of incorporating IoT devices into business ecosystems.

The research, which investigates how IT teams can reach devices at the edge of networks securely, effectively and at scale, has revealed these top 5 IoT concerns:

● Employees bringing their own apps (BYOA) (86%) ● Employees bringing their own devices (BYOD) (84%) ● IoT devices entering the workplace (72%) ● The move to cloud computing (69%) ● The move to edge computing (67%)

IT decision makers also rated the move to cloud (69%) and edge computing (67%) as posing a significant concern.

Commenting on the research, Kirk Wolfe, VP of Corporate Development at Kollective said, “The influx of new internet-enabled devices entering the workplace presents a multitude of challenges to IT teams, with many already struggling to maintain device security.

For every new device brought into the workplace, a CIO must consider the impact on the wider IT and security ecosystem. Especially as each device requires updates and patches to meet compliance protocols that keep enterprises safe from potential cyberattacks. It is these concerns that overshadow the potential business benefits of IoT, limiting the willingness of teams to adopt it at scale.

Business demand is increasingly driving IoT use cases that will require enterprises to build large scale networks with sufficient infrastructures to distribute thousands, tens of thousands and eventually millions of updates across their networks frequently. In order to cope with this level of demand in the future, software-defined networking infrastructure will become necessary to scale and maintain large-scale IoT networks in the enterprise“
