Yorkshire transport company introduces 60 new buses with £71m investment
A Yorkshire transport company has announced that it is introducing more than 60 new buses to the region as part of its seven-figure investment.
First West Yorkshire has reported that the latest phase of the company’s £71m investment to improve services across Leeds is bringing more than 60 buses into the area.
The buses all use Euro 6 technology, which are more climate-friendly than models previously used.
Simon Carlisle, engineering director, commented: “This is a significant milestone in our long-term vision to upgrade the fleet to give customers a better travel experience and create cleaner air for the city.
“Buses are key to tackling congestion and reducing emissions. A fully-loaded double-decker bus can take 75 cars off the road.
“Improving air quality in Leeds is a huge priority and the investment in ultra-low emission demonstrates our commitment to work in partnership with the local authority.”
The city’s council added that the new buses will comply with Leeds’ soon-to-be-implemented ‘clean air zone’.
Leeds City Council’s executive board member for climate change, transport and sustainable development, councillor Lisa Mulherin, said: “As we as a Council are working to make bus use more reliable and attractive for Leeds residents and those visiting and working in the city through improved bus lanes and bus gateways at junctions, First working to deliver cleaner technology for their fleet will help to reduce carbon and the wider environmental impact of transport in the city.”
