Green light for Darlington development set to create over 700 jobs

Proposals for a new commercial and logistics scheme that could create hundreds of jobs have been approved by Darlington Borough Council.

Planning and development consultancy Lichfields has secured consent for the plans at Morton Park in Darlington, on behalf of landowner Durham Cathedral and developer Tritax Symmetry.

Plans for the site, which is adjacent to a 2.1 million sq ft logistics centre, include 630,000 sq ft of commercial and logistics space.

In addition, the site could become home to a series of associated developments, including a hotel, family pub, drive-thru restaurants, cafés and petrol station.

The national planning specialist has estimated that the development value will be in the range of £30m, and between 715 and 800 jobs would be created upon completion.

Lichfields’ senior planner, Dominic Holding, commented: “The site is in an excellent location next to the A66; it is likely to prove attractive to potential operators and will enhance the on-going, adjacent, developments.

“This is a key approval for the town and wider area, which could help create hundreds of new jobs and provide a major boost to the economy.”
