CODA Planning nominated for major national award
SHEFFIELD planning experts CODA Planning have been shortlisted for a top national award for their work on a major Sheffield property development.
The CODA Planning team, have been developing proposals over several months for the latest phase of Sheffield based Sky-House Co’s pioneering Sky-House, the back-to-back housing concept created by the architects at CODA Studios.
The Planning Awards 2020 nomination in the Design Excellence category recognises CODA Planning’s contribution to the Sky-House project at the former British Tissues site in north Sheffield.
The nomination highlights the way in which the CODA team’s proposals have complemented the historic site’s existing and remaining architecture and the wider redevelopment proposals.
The citation explains: “The Sky-House and associated conversion deserves an award as it demonstrates that local and niche developers such as Sky-House Co can provide a housing product, which is attractive to the market on difficult brownfield sites, by taking a partnership approach with volume house builders.
“This approach does not preclude the provision of unique, bespoke and high-quality homes and the design quality is not diluted or compromised as a result.”
Sky-House Co has already been given approval to create 35 of its acclaimed Sky-House homes at the former industrial site in the picturesque Don Valley.
But a further application currently with Sheffield Council planners will see Sky-House Co seek permission to convert the site’s existing mill building into a mixed use food hall, community hub and leisure facility, with facilities for start up businesses too.
The Planning Awards - which incorporate the Placemaking Awards and the Regeneration & Renewal Awards - reward excellence in professional planning work, as well as related activities such as placemaking, urban design, economic development, housing, regeneration, legal advice, environmental consulting and property development.
“Our relationship with Sky-House Co is a long standing and extremely successful one,” said CODA Planning director Rob Crolla.
“Having already taken Sky-House successfully through the planning process at its debut Waverley site in Sheffield, we were very excited to start work on the British Tissues site as this presented a whole new set of challenges in the way it combines new build with the needs of existing and historically valued structures.”
The Oughtibridge Sky-House project has been developed in association with Barratt Homes, who are developing the rest of the site, and CEG, with support from Homes England, the public body that funds new housing in England.
The winners of the Planning Awards 2020 will be announced at a ceremony in London which is currently scheduled for September 24.
