North Yorkshire town set for £15.1m digital infrastructure boost

A range of publicly-owned buildings in a North Yorkshire town are set to benefit from a multi-million pound digital connectivity initiative.

Six buildings in the coastal town of Filey will be connected through a fibre network, including the town’s fire station, library and Filey Surgery, as part of the £15.1m Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) project.

The result of a bid by the North Yorkshire County Council and its wholly-owned high-speed connectivity provider NYnet to the government’s Local Full Fibre Networks Challenge Fund, The Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) project aims to connect hundreds of public sector sites across the region.

Filey was not originally identified as one of the initial 16 towns set to benefit from the initiative, however the progress of the project has enabled the town to be included in the connectivity upgrade.

Cllr Don Mackenzie, executive member for access, commented: “This is very good news for Filey and we are very pleased that we have made such good progress with the project to be able to add the town to the initial list of communities in the scheme.

“The LFFN programme brings about a remarkable upgrade in the county’s digital infrastructure, which will result in major economic benefits and a future-proofed network.”
