Green light for multi-million pound Newcastle United Foundation sports hub

Plans for a new multi-million pound sports and education facility in Newcastle have been approved.

The Newcastle United Foundation has been granted approval for the new hub in the city centre near St James’ Park, the home ground of Newcastle United.

Set back from the surrounding streets with pedestrian access from the city centre via Pitt Street, the hub will feature a range of sporting and leisure facilities as well as serve as the new base for Newcastle United Foundation.

Designed by Ryder Architecture, the three storey hub will comprise a four-court sports hall, rooftop pitch, match review suite, viewing areas, an activity studio, spin studio, teaching spaces and an open plan office space.

Work is expected to begin on site in the autumn, and was granted approval from the chair of Newcastle City Council planning committee under the newly implemented scheme of temporary delegation - a result of the disruption caused by COVID-19.

Sarah Medcalf, deputy head of Newcastle United Foundation, commented: “We are delighted that planning permission has been granted and all our efforts are now focused on creating a building that will serve the community for generations to come.

“Ryder has provided an excellent service throughout the planning process and I would like to thank the project team for their professionalism, knowledge and support in reaching this important milestone.”

Alexandra Blaylock, project architect at Ryder, added: “Helping the Foundation to realise their ambitions for their new home has been a hugely rewarding journey for Ryder.

“Learning about the great work provided created a lot of passion within the design team to provide an architecturally and socially valuable building for all users.

“Having worked closely with the Foundation for some time, we have formed a great relationship which we look forward to continuing throughout the next phase of the development.”
