Abandoned Georgian stately home to be transformed into Blaydon apartments

Plans have been approved to transform a stately home in the North East into an apartment building.

Axwell Hall, a Georgian stately home in Blaydon, has been abandoned for nearly 40 years, and will be revamped with a development of 11 apartments by a local businessman.

The Newcastle office of national planning and development consultancy Lichfields has acted on behalf of the developer.

The plans had originally been for 23 apartments, but has been reduced to 11, to “significantly reduce the level of proposed intervention in the historic fabric of the building”.

James Taylor, planning director at Lichfields, commented: “The Hall is currently an empty shell and has been subject to theft, vandalism and decay.

“However, despite this, Axwell Hall as it stands today, remains an impressive building of historical and architectural significance to the region.

“We are delighted to assist in bringing a grand Listed Building back into beneficial use, providing additional high-quality homes for the area, and safeguarding its future.”
