Hundreds of British Airways jobs at risk as all Boeing 747s to be retired
Hundreds of British Airways (BA) employees face redundancy as the airline has announced the permanent grounding of all its Boeing 747s.
The airline has confirmed that its 31 jumbo jets will be retired with immediate effect as a result of the downturn in travel.
Initially set to be retired in 2024, BA has brought forward the grounding of its Boeing 747s due to the disruption and travel restrictions caused by COVID-19.
Ground staff for the airline are at risk of losing their jobs, as part of the airline’s attempt to cut costs amid the downturn.
A spokesperson for BA commented: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm we are proposing to retire our entire 747 fleet with immediate effect.
“It is unlikely our magnificent ‘queen of the skies’ will ever operate commercial services for British Airways again due to the downturn in travel caused by the Covid-19 global pandemic.”
